  1. Miss Lily Elsie (1886-1962) was a celebrated Edwardian beauty and star of theater, especially of musical comedy – with “The Merry Widow” as her first huge success. She was a favorite of many, such as the prime minister Lloyd George, and it is reputed that Cecil Beaton’s facination with her was the driving force in his interest in fashion, costume and photographic portraiture. In her day she was as famous a beauty/personality as Marilyn or Audrey. She always reminded me of Kate Winslet, too, as she was in P & P or in Titantic!.
